The more I expose myself to the world of singledom, the most stuff people draw to my attention. Take the story of the guy who sent an email out to people he met at a business networking convention in the United States, asking them to help him find his ideal woman. And the websites allow you to specify those characteristics, to varying degrees. With some, the only initial search criteria are the sex of the other person, and perhaps their age. Some, more sophisticated sites, allow you to narrow down your search with far more stringent preferences. Height, income, hair colour, eye colour, skin colour, education, profession, smoking preferences, alcohol consumption, body type ….
Science confirms the distinction between the biological brain and the conscious mind. Each day, a game of mind versus matter plays out on a field defined by the problems we must solve. Most are routine, and don’t demand a more mindful approach. It’s when we’re faced with more difficult challenges that our thinking becomes vulnerable to brain patterns that can lead us astray. We leap to solutions that simply don’t work. We fixate on old mindsets that keep us stuck in neutral.

Every day, millions of single adults, worldwide, visit an online dating site. Many are lucky, finding life-long love or at least some exciting escapades. Others are not so lucky. The industry—eHarmony, Match, OkCupid, and a thousand other online dating sites—wants singles and the general public to believe that seeking a partner through their site is not just an alternative way to traditional venues for finding a partner, but a superior way. Is it? With our colleagues Paul Eastwick, Benjamin Karney, and Harry Reis, we recently published a book-length article in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest that examines this question and evaluates online dating from a scientific perspective.

More recently, a plethora of market-minded dating books are coaching singles on how to seal a romantic deal, and dating apps, which have rapidly become the mode du jour for single people to meet each other, make sex and romance even more like shopping. The idea that a population of single people can be analyzed like a market might be useful to some extent to sociologists or economists, but the widespread adoption of it by single people themselves can result in a warped outlook on love.
M oira Weigel , the author of Labor of Love: The Invention of Dating , argues that dating as we know it—single people going out together to restaurants, bars, movies, and other commercial or semicommercial spaces—came about in the late 19th century. What dating does is it takes that process out of the home, out of supervised and mostly noncommercial spaces, to movie theaters and dance halls.
The application of the supply-and-demand concept, Weigel said, may have come into the picture in the late 19th century, when American cities were exploding in population. Read: The rise of dating-app fatigue. Actual romantic chemistry is volatile and hard to predict; it can crackle between two people with nothing in common and fail to materialize in what looks on paper like a perfect match. The fact that human-to-human matches are less predictable than consumer-to-good matches is just one problem with the market metaphor; another is that dating is not a one-time transaction.
This makes supply and demand a bit harder to parse. Given that marriage is much more commonly understood to mean a relationship involving one-to-one exclusivity and permanence, the idea of a marketplace or economy maps much more cleanly onto matrimony than dating. The marketplace metaphor also fails to account for what many daters know intuitively: that being on the market for a long time—or being off the market, and then back on, and then off again—can change how a person interacts with the marketplace.
W hen market logic is applied to the pursuit of a partner and fails , people can start to feel cheated. This can cause bitterness and disillusionment, or worse. She estimates that she gets 10 times as many messages as the average man in her town.

There is a third Vestas V in town owned by a private company still operating with a permit. That private-owned turbine, by the way, has had massive expensive gearbox replacement parts done with specialized crane service.
There are no studies of two or three operating at the same time.

IT superheroes can’t fly — at least, not without an airplane. They don’t possess X-ray vision or super strength. They won’t be found wearing capes or spandex at work. Scrolling through my email inbox this morning, I counted no less than 25 pitches from start-ups, entrepreneurs and their PR representatives , each hoping I’ll feature their company news or products in an upcoming article.
And I want to help them out. I really do. But sadly, most of these pitches and press releases contain flaws that keep them from ever seeing the light of day—or print. Below I’ve listed some of the more grievous examples of poor PR presentation that are sure to get news of your natural product ignored.
Telling me that you were recently featured in The New York Time s, Wall Street Journal or any other publication doesn’t do what you think it does. You think I’ll take you more seriously or want to write about you for fear of being the only one who hasn’t.
This paper is certainly relevant to the MrP thread on politicization of the covid response, in that the paper risks injecting misinformation into an already-broken policy discussion. But I think it would be better to use it as a case study on poor statistics and questionable study design. Pretty harsh words—but this is just some guy sending me an email.
